Walking the Path of Surrender: A Journey Towards Divine Minimalism
Commencing on my second-year Padayaatre from Bengaluru to the sacred Tirupati hills (last week), a journey of approximately 260 kilometers over six days, I knew the path ahead would test me in every possible way — physically, mentally, and emotionally. This was not my first journey, and as I shared in my previous reflections on the experience, each year brings its own challenges. Yet, despite these known trials, thousands of devotees, including myself, willingly set out on this hard journey, driven by an almost unspeakable motivation.
What fuels this determination? Is it the sense of accomplishment that comes with conquering such a distance? Is it the profound sense of belonging to a community/tribe united in purpose? Or perhaps, it is the pursuit of inner peace, that is found in the rhythmic movement of our steps. Could it be the ultimate act of surrender to the Supreme Lord, an offering of our fatigue, our hopes, our very selves?

As I walked, I found myself in conversation with many fellow yaatris. The same question lingered in my mind and on my lips: What drives you to undertake this journey? Initially, most spoke of the physical benefits and the belief that the Lord would grant them their heart’s desires. But as our conversations deepened, I posed a more challenging question: “If the Lord did not give you what you desired, if he granted you nothing of what you aspire for, would you still take up this yaatre?” Without hesitation, most responded with a resolute “Yes.” This response, given so swiftly and with such conviction, revealed something far deeper.
As I delved into their feelings, I realized that for many, this pilgrimage was an act of surrender — surrender to the Supreme. In that surrender, they found a profound realization of the Lord’s mighty power, an energy that surpasses worldly desires. They could feel this power, not as something external, but as a noticeable presence within their lives, guiding them, shaping them, sustaining them.
Along with this surrender comes another profound realization: a life of minimalism is a life without burden. As we walk with little more than our faith, we gain an insight into the beauty of minimalistic living. This simplicity brings a sense of lightness, not just in our physical being but in our mental and emotional states as well. We begin to understand that in letting go of excess, we come closer to the Divine, to that which is eternal and unchanging.
In much the same way, our Padayaatre, stripped of the comforts and distractions of everyday life (for one week), allows us to shed the layers of material attachment. As we walk, carrying only the bare necessities, we begin to feel the lightness of being that comes with minimalism. This lightness opens our hearts and minds to the Divine, drawing us closer to the Supreme in a way that is both profound and transformative.
And when we return to our everyday lives after the yaatre, this practice of minimalism lingers within us. It prompts us to see the beauty in our lives with whatever we have, fostering a deep sense of gratitude for being given more than we could ever want. We start to understand that many of the things we once thought were necessary for our happiness are, in fact, distractions from a simpler, more peaceful existence. This realization, born from the experience of living minimally, brings us closer to a life that feels like heaven on earth — a life of contentment, clarity, and closeness to the Divine.
This journey, then, is not just a physical one; it is a spiritual expedition. Each step is a step towards something greater than ourselves, a step into the unknown, where faith becomes the only compass. And in that faith, in that surrender, we discover not just the Lord’s presence, but the true essence of our own being — a deep, unshakable connection to the divine that exists within us all.
