When Grace is All You Seek!

Evenings, I see my mother sitting in front of the TV, engrossed in devotional serials. Her eyes are fixed on the screen, her heart completely immersed in the stories of gods and goddesses (Mahabharata and Ramayana). Sometimes, tears roll down her cheeks as she watches certain scenes. It’s not just the stories that move her—it’s the devotion, the surrender, the connection she feels.

I often wonder, what makes her feel this way? What does she gain from this deep emotional experience? Is it peace? Is it fulfillment? These moments remind me of a story I read long ago about Shri Rama.

The Story of Shri Rama

After completing a grand yaaga (sacred ritual), Shri Rama decided to give away everything in his palace to his people. He opened his doors and invited everyone to come and take whatever they wanted. Standing quietly in a corner with Lakshmana, Shri Rama observed as people rushed to pick up gold, ornaments, and other treasures.

Amid this crowd, an elderly woman entered. Unlike the others, she didn’t head straight for the valuables. Instead, her eyes wandered around the room, as if searching for something far more precious. Finally, her gaze moved on to Shri Rama standing in the corner.

Her face lit up with joy, and she began walking toward him. Shri Rama noticed her and waited patiently. When she reached him, he greeted her with a warm smile and said, “Amma, you may take anything you wish from the palace.”

The woman, however, didn’t look at the treasures around her. Tears welled up in her eyes as she folded her hands, bent down, and sat at Shri Rama’s feet. With a voice trembling with devotion, she said, “Rama, I need nothing else. All I want is your grace and blessings!”

In that moment, she found what everyone else in the room was still searching for. She discovered fulfillment—not in material wealth but in the divine connection that filled her heart.

In a world filled with material pursuits, true fulfillment lies in surrendering to the divine. This story of Shri Rama and an elderly woman seeking nothing but his grace reminds us of the highest form of devotion. It connects deeply with the timeless tale of Shabari’s unwavering faith. What if, like them, we too find peace not in possessions, but in grace? Read on to explore this beautiful story of surrender and divine connection.

A Story That Echoes Shabari’s Devotion

This story reminds me of another beautiful tale—the story of Shabari in the forest near Pampa Sarovara (a lake). For years, Shabari waited with unwavering devotion for Shri Rama to visit her humble hut. Her faith never changed, her love never faded. And when Shri Rama finally arrived, her joy was beyond words. She, too, sought nothing but his grace and found her ultimate purpose in surrendering to him.

What Do These Stories are trying tell us?

Watching my mother, hearing these stories, I feel they all point to one profound truth: the highest form of surrender brings the deepest joy. It’s not about collecting wealth or achievements. True fulfillment comes when we let go of worldly desires and seek the divine’s grace.

Perhaps that’s what my mother feels when she watches those devotional scenes—the same peace, the same connection, the same fulfillment that the elderly woman and Shabari experienced.
